What to do before your rental contract ends?

Is your rental contract expiring? Contact the landlord a few weeks in advance. You then go around the rental property and the landlord can comment on any damage. That way you still have time to do maintenance or repairs yourself (or have them done).

get these in order before you leave:
  • Completely empty the property.
  • Clean the property.
  • Remove all stains on the walls and fill any holes.
  • Give the maintenance certificates to the landlord.
  • Maintain the garden.

Below are some tips to prepare for your departure.

What to do at the end of your rental contract?

You and the landlord get together:

  • Record the meter readings (water and energy) and sign them both. Take pictures of the meter readings along with a newspaper from that day, for example.
  • Complete the takeover documents for water and energy and sign them both. Keep this document on file (or a picture of it).
  • Hand over all keys to the rental property. Ask the landlord to sign for receipt of the keys.
  • Did you prepare an inventory at the beginning of the rental contract? If so, prepare a “comparative inventory” now.

You and the landlord are both equally responsible to end the rental contract properly.
